Commodity ETFs are constructed for their holdings to track the price action of the underlying energy, metals, or food item commodities they represent like gold, silver, oil, natural gas, corn or others. These types of exchange traded funds can also hold a diversified basket of commodities to create a tracking index. It’s not practical for most ETFs to buy, own and store its holdings as a physical inventory in a warehouse so most commodity ETFs hold future contracts for what they track. Futures are a type of derivative option that gives the buyer the right to accept delivery of the commodity at a certain price at a specific date or deliver the product at a set price at a future date. These futures are used to create the price tracking of a commodity through buying, holding, and selling them inside the ETF.
