Jeff Bezos’ wealth is due to the value of his Amazon stock holdings. The Amazon stock price has been correlated with the growth of his personal fortune. He still owns about 12% of the total outstanding shares in Amazon even though he has been selling to raise cash recently.
This is not his highest net worth ever, as Jeff Bezos’ wealth peak topped out at around $151.4 billion in 2018 as Amazon stock was over $2,000 a share. In July 2019, Jeff Bezos’ net worth fell approximately $36 billion after their divorce was finalized. His ex wife MacKenzie Bezos received 4% of Amazon (19.7 million shares) in their divorce settlement.
